The Nigerian government is facing scrutiny over the treatment of detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, amid concerns for his health. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris denied claims of mistreatment, stating that Gambaryan is being treated fairly at the Kuje Correctional Center near Abuja. He also emphasized that Gambaryan has access to quality medical care and consular services from his home government.
In response to a letter from House Republicans to U.S. President Joe Biden, alleging that Gambaryan was not allowed to meet with his legal team without government officials present, Idris refuted these claims, asserting that the government’s aim is to ensure a lawful trial for Gambaryan.
Despite being detained in Nigeria since late February on money laundering charges, Gambaryan’s health took a turn for the worse when he collapsed in a courtroom due to malaria. His family criticized the prison authorities for delaying his medical evaluation, with U.S. lawmakers Congressman French Hill and Cynthia Houlahan visiting the prison and reporting that Gambaryan’s condition has deteriorated significantly. Another Binance employee, Nadeem Anjarwalla, managed to escape Nigerian authorities and reportedly fled to Kenya.
As the situation unfolds, Anjarwalla remains at large while Gambaryan’s health continues to be a cause for concern.
