Elon Musk Ignites Excitement and Speculation in Crypto Community with OpenAI Prank
Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk caused quite a stir on March 6 when he playfully targeted OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research firm he co-founded, with a series of memes. One meme even humorously renamed the organization as “ClosedAI.”
Musk’s recent meme spree comes in the wake of a lawsuit he filed against CEO Sam Altman, accusing him of violating the company’s initial agreement. The crypto community, however, didn’t just react to the memes; they also engaged in intense speculation about the potential consequences of Musk’s unexpected move.
David Gokhshtein, a prominent figure in the crypto space, went as far as suggesting that Musk should consider acquiring OpenAI, drawing parallels to his past acquisition of Twitter. Within the cryptocurrency community, there has been widespread support for Musk, particularly due to his integration of the Grok AI chatbot into the X platform.
Grok AI, developed by Musk’s startup xAI, offers a different approach compared to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, prioritizing openness when addressing various subjects. Musk created Grok AI as a response to what he perceives as the ideological biases of OpenAI.
However, OpenAI has pushed back against Musk’s claims in the ongoing legal saga. In their response to his lawsuit, the AI research company released correspondence that shed light on the dispute. OpenAI revealed that Musk had previously recognized the need for for-profit funding to sustain the company’s research, contradicting his current allegations.
According to OpenAI, Musk initially pledged $1 billion in funding but later retracted the offer. The company ultimately secured a whopping $13 billion in funding from Microsoft, transforming itself into a for-profit entity with a valuation of $90 billion. This latest development has reignited the longstanding conflict between Musk and OpenAI.
This “meme spat” is not the first time Musk has clashed with OpenAI. The dispute traces back to 2018 when the Tesla CEO argued that the company urgently required billions of dollars and suggested that selling itself to Tesla was the only viable path forward. OpenAI rejected this proposal and opted to wait for Microsoft’s funding, further straining the relationship between Musk and the company.
