Portugal’s National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) has taken action to protect personal data by temporarily banning Worldcoin’s biometric data collection for 90 days. The CNPD issued the ban in response to concerns raised by multiple complaints. The commission cited issues with the collection of biometric data without proper consent or authorization, as well as deficiencies in information provided to data subjects. Media reports indicating that over 300,000 individuals in Portugal had already provided their biometric data further influenced the decision. The CNPD’s ongoing investigation will analyze reports and take necessary steps to ensure compliance with data protection regulations. Worldcoin, founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has also faced legal uncertainties in Spain, Hong Kong, and Kenya. Despite these challenges, Worldcoin has stated its commitment to operating lawfully and complying with relevant laws.
